OAU’s Football team Lose First Match As WAUGA Commences

Over the weekend, Obafemi Awolowo football team pitched against their counterparts at the Nnamdi Azikwe stadium at the university of Nigeria, Nsukka. The football game was part of the line of activities at the annual West African university games .

According to UNN pals, the OAU team showed valiancy and dominated the field at the first quarter of the game making the game end at first half with no winner.

There was downpour however towards the end of the second half which played a great face against our beloved team; Making the UNN team winners as the match ended on 1 against zero.

Few Oau students, while giving their opinion says that they are proud of the team; considering that they must have been worn out from the just concluded examinations.

Our goal scoring, trophy worthy football team, is currently in UNN (University of Nigeria Nsukka) for the West African University Games (WAUGA) which starts today..

#teamOAU would be kick starting the event in a football match against UNN by 4 pm.

WAUGA is an annual university games among West African countries. The WAUGA Games are aimed at fostering greater friendship among youths of the West African sub-region all over the world.

The WAUGA will feature football and hockey and attracts participants from over 60 universities in West Africa.

We at Oau Christians wish them the best! Bring home the trophy!

Oc Sports: Football Headline This Week

Sports headlines over the weekend
Good day guys long time hope you have all been good. Well we have been on break for a while but am happy to inform you we are back and better and we will be
delivering you news making rounds around the world of sport.
We will start our news today from Africa and currently the Africa under-17 championship is going on in Niger and we will be bringing you news about the tournament.
Similarly the Africa youth championship or Africa under-20 championship is kicking off on the 8th of March in Senegal.the tournament runs till the 22nd of March

Nigeria under-20 coach Manu Garba releases 21-man list for AYC 2015 drops star player kelechi iheanacho, also cut from the list are Chidiebere Nwakali and Musa Yahaya who has been tagged the ‘’Nigerian Iniesta’’ the two star players were however dropped because of injury concerns. The coach however reiterated that they will likely make the world cup list should they be fit by then. The list released has some players from the world cup winning under-17 team in UAE in 2013. Among them are Awoniyi taiwo, captain Musa Mohammed, Chidera Eze, Akinjide Idowu, Dele Alampasu.

In other news the Nigeria’s under-17 side couldn’t make it to the final of this years Africa under-17 championship as they were defeated by the ‘’Amajibos’’ of South Africa in the semifinal and they will have to settle for 3rd or 4th, they were however able to book a ticket to the under-17 world cup in Chile later in the year. Their coach Emmanuel Amuneke expressed his disappointment about their inability to qualify for the final but promised they would do better at the world cup and try to replicate the performance the Manu Garba led side achieved in UAE two years ago

We move from Africa straight to Europe and our first point of call is yesterdays europa league round of 32 matches which saw Liverpool, Tottenham, Celtic, Trabzonspor, all crash out. besiktas defeated Liverpool on penalties as the match ended in a 1 all draw on aggregate after extra time. inter defeated celtic by 4 goals to 3 on aggregate. Tottenham lost by 3 goals to 1 on aggregate to fiorentina, chelsea loanee Mohammed Salah scored

Arsenal,Liverpool and Manchester united record victories as Manchester city slump to defeat. Arsenal defeated Everton by 2 goals to nil at the emirates, Manchester united defeated sunderland by two goals to nil, Liverpool however recorded the greatest upset defeating Manchester city by two goals to one at Anfield. Chelsea however didn’t play any match in the league on Saturday meaning a win in their outstanding match extends their lead at the top of the league to 8 points

Chelsea were crowned winners of the English Capital One Cup or Carling Cup on Sunday as they saw off Tottenham hotspur by two goals to nil at Wembley. John terry put the Blues ahead in the first half and Diego Costa scored the second to give chelsea their first silverware of the season. Congratulations Chelsea FC

Barcelona,Valencia record victories as Real Madrid and Athletico madrid are held. Barcelona defeated Granada on Saturday to mount their title challenge, Athletico Madrid and Real Madrid played out draws with Real Madrid playing a 1-all draw with villareal while Athletico Madrid played out a goalless draw with sevilla

Bayern munich and Dortmund record comfortable victories over Mainz and schalke respectively. Bayern extended their superb form at the expense of Mainz defeating them by four goals to one making it three wins in their last three league matches scoring 18 goals in the three. Dortmund on the other hand defeated schalke by 3 goals to nil to show that they are back in winning ways

Nigerian golden eaglets had to settle for fourth position as they were trashed by the Syli Babes of Guinea three goals to one in the third place match at the just concluded Africa under-17 championships

Arsnal legend Thiery Henry has backed chelsea to win the treble this season. He believes they have what it takes to compete against any club in Europe

Away from football now we dive a little into tennis and our news today is about French Open record holder Rafael Nadal. The tennis star from Spain won a record equalling 46th career title on clay court in the Argentina Open on Sunday defeating Juan Monaco a major favourite for the trophy. Nadal who is currently world number four now has 65 career titles to his name. If you ask me that is a wonderful feat.

Before I sign off I would like to add something. Arsenal were defeated at home by 3 goals to 1 by AS Monaco in the first leg of the uefa champions league round of 16. Do you think arsenal can still qualify? Don’t forget that in the 2003/2004 season Arsenal lost at home to Inter milan by three goals to nil but still qualified after they defeated Inter milan by 5 goals to 1 in the return leg

Ghana will slog it out with ivory coast for the ultimate prize in the final of afcon 2015 as both teams dispatched their opponents in the semifinal convincingly.
Ghana saw of hosts equatorial guinea by 3 goals to nil in a match that saw a lot of violence fron the home fans late in the game, the referee had to bring the match to a halt in the 87th minute when the fans of equatorial guinea started throwing objects at the ghanaian players
. It took the intervention of security personnels to quell the situation. Ivory coast on the other hand defeated DR congo by 3 goals to 1 to book their place in the final of the tournament. The final will be played on Sunday in equatorial guinea.

Sports news making the rounds over the weekend.

Monday February 2nd was the deadline day for the January transfer window for the 2014/2015 football season in Europe. The transfer window saw a lot of deadline day moves.

Although prior to that there have been moves like Gabriel paulista, lucas silva,martin odegaard e.t.c however some clubs left their business till late in the window before making any purchases.

This weekend saw some major upsets in the fourth round of the English fa cup.the first major upset started on Friday night when Manchester united; couldn’t overcome fourth tier side Cambridge united.then on Saturday it was the turn of Chelsea,mancity,Tottenham, and Swansea as they all crashed out of the fa cup. Chelsea gave up a two goal lead to lose by four goals to two against third tier side Bradford city at Stamford bridge. Star studded mancity lost at home to former real Madrid’s assistant coach Aitor Karanka’s middlesborough by two goals to nil. An early Andros townsend penalty wasn’t enough to help Tottenham defeat Leicester city as they lost by 2 goals to 1 at whiye hart lane. Other results in the fourth round of the fa cup are;

Nigerian erstwhile striker Victor anichebe scored a brace for west bromich albion as they defeated Birmingham city 2 goals to 1 at saint Andrews park in their fourth round fa cup tie
Arsenal defeated brighton and hove albion by 3 goals to 2 to progress to the next round of the fa cup courtesy goals from Theo Walcott,Mesut ozil and Tomas rosicky. The gunners went two goals up before their opponents scored a goal. However a wonderful setup pass from Olivier giroud into the part of rosicky was volleyed home by the Czech midfielder.a string of well connected passes saw brighton score a second they were however not able to score an equaliser  to setup a replay at the emirates. Arsenal also lost a couple of chances in the dying minutes of the game as Alexis Sancez and Chuba Akpom  drew saves from the brighton goalkeeper

We start our reports from England where we bring you news making the rounds in English football
Arsenal complete signing of polish’’ wonderkid’’ Krystian  Bielik from polish club legia Warsaw for an undisclosed fee .The 17 year old defensive midfieder is expected to join arsenal’s first team immediately. Sources believe the transfer fee to be close to 2.4 million pounds. Arsenal had to fight off strong competition from german side Hamburg to sign the player.

Arsenal French striker Yaya Sanogo has joined Crystal palace on loan till the end of the season. This is in a bid for him to get more first team action. Bordeaux of france were major contenders for his signature however arsenal boss arsene wenger felt a move to a premier club would suit him more.

Arsene wenger has reassured arsenal fans of serious work in progress concerning strenghtning the back four especially the centre back role. Arsene wenger has applauded recent performance of French starlet francis coquelin and has stated that he may delay his signing a holding midfielder. The question now is that can francis coquelin continue to perform.

Reports from spain have suggested that Borrusia Dortmund star Marco Reus may be on his way to Spain in the summer.

Arsenal target Winston Reid has told Westham he wants to join Arsenal. West ham are said to have valued him at 8 million pounds while Arsenal are hoping to sign him for a fee around 5 million.

OC Sports: An update On The Ongoing AFCON 2015 in Equatorial Guinea

The competiotion kicked off on Saturday 17th January in equatorial guinea. The tournament which was supposed to be hosted by Morocco before they withdrew and subsequently got banned.
The opening day saw host country Equatorial Guinea take on Congo and then Burkina Faso take on Gabon later in the day.
