Students’ Union Judicial Council Scraps 2.5 CGPA Criterium

The Judicial Council of the Students’ Union, OAU has nullified the 2.5 CGPA benchmark for contesting SU elections.

This ruling was given in respect to JC/2015/001, an eligibility suit between Counsel Olukolade Ehimosan, Jeff George and Omotayo Akande. The court’s verdict was given by Lord Chancellor Joshua Olorunda on the 6th of August after listening to both sides at three separate hearings.

Also, Suit JC/2015/002, an order of mandamus to bar Ibiyemi Awotiwon from being sworn in as Secretary-General of the Students’ Union, was withdrawn. This was following a decision by Ibiyemi Awotiwon and Hon. Seun Oketooto to sheath swords.

OP-ED: Will IfeLaw Get Her Deserved Justice?

For the past few weeks, campus has been agog with the Hon. Seun CGPA scandal. Now things have come to a head and public opinion is roughly divided into 2 camps. Those who support Hon. Seun versus pro-Ibiyemi elements. The Hon. Seun camp is driven by the radical left-wingers while the Ibiyemi camp is mostly peopled by conservative and sentimental law students.

Some prefer to see this struggle as a clash of personalities; a vendetta against the Faculty of Law and all supporters of Phakoo.

I see this is a clash of ideals, with individual egos as pawns. As it has always been throughout the history of mankind, we are posed with one question, two answers. Do we judge a man on the basis of a certificate, or not. Do we follow the rules because that’s the way its always been, or do we defy the norm

I am a law student, but I’ve always dissented from the general opinion. I believe that Hon. Seun has every right to stay in office. Ibiyemi better try his luck next time.

When the generality of Great Ife students voted for Hon. Seun, did they have his academic performance in mind? It’s quite hypocritic that the very people who ignored Buhari’s academic deficiency, are now singing a new song when it has come closer to home.

If the law students continue pushing this cause with the unfortunate backing of the Law Students Society exco, they will end up building more animosity for themselves. The memories of Ibikunle’s inefficiency, a law graduate and erstwhile SU President is still fresh in students memory. They should stop behaving like spoilt brats and realise that they cannot always have their way.

Some might argue that this will lay a bad precedent, but let me ask? Who laid the previous precedent? Was it you? Was it your representatives? Why would you become zealous over a rule that was imposed on you? Where is your sense of liberty? Change is constant. No rule is permanent. What one man created, another can destroy.

What OAU Students are saying on the Social media about Sec. Gen CPGA Saga

OAU students have had one or two things to say as regards the Secretary General’s CGPA saga. Some have taken to the social media in defense and attack of the final year Political science student.

Following the investigations of the Electoral Petition Committee, Hon. Seun Oketooto had been found to have a CGPA of 2.48, instead of the minimum 2.5, and as such, was not eligible to run for any office.

In a statement dated 14th  of  June,  one Mr Moshood Odunayo on Facebook has called on the current Secretary-General  to vacate his office.

In the statement he said that Hon. Seun did not deserve the title “Honourable”. He said
“I can only refer people with the appellation ‘honourable’ only if they do honourable things which has inspire both born and unborn generation. How can you expect me to refer someone who forge his C.G.P.A as an Honourable as his being referred to by his political glutton admirers?”

He also condemned his refusal to step aside for the first runner-up, Ibiyemi, to assume office. He described the silence of the CEC on the whole matter as “very shameful”.

He advised the CEC to take an official position before it became too late. He called on all student to resist any forms of illegality and called for the immediate swearing-in of Ibiyemi.

Likewise, one Wole Shoniyon believes the part four Psychology student brought disgrace to Great Ife and described him as a bad example.

However, Sammy H Peters, former Sec Gen aspirant is of the opinion that the minimum 2.5 CGPA is not constitutional and that there is no academic requirement in the Great Ife Sacrosanct Constitution.

The Students’ union is still silent on the issue and has refused to release any statement to address it.
