5 Events OAU Students Should Expect This Semester

1. Elections:
Here comes the semester where banners and posters and bills of political aspirants are spread around. At this point in the semester, people have already been put in different campaign groups for certain people, be it at the CEC level or the HEC level or departmental or level, as the case maybe.

2. Convocation:
Yes, this is that time of the year when food overflows in OAU, that appointed time of the year when Awo boys would go to the canopies of just anyone convoking and expect to be given food. Those who graduated in the 2013/2014 session will be graduating officially. This year’s convocation will be a four-day celebration starting from the 9th of December till the 12th of the same month. Rumours have it that some dignitaries such as Pastor E.A Adeboye will also be given honorary degrees during the convocation ceremonies.

3. Ordination of New Excos In Fellowships:
A norm about the second semester is how new executives and new pastors would be picked in different fellowships. This could be the period when people would be separated from friends and a lot of new relationships would be made as well. Well, I hope my friends and I are not “carried”.

4.Departmental weeks:
This semester is the semester in which departments and faculties will have their much anticipated weeks. During these departmental weeks, games are usually played, football matches organized, rallies, cultural nights and lots more. Last session, I was privileged to be a part of the weeks of three departments; Faculty of Law, Department of English language and the Department of Architecture.

5. Social Media Conference:
Yes! This semester, OAUChristians will be holding the first ever Social Media Conference on OAU campus. The event, scheduled to come up on the 12th of December 2015, would take place at the Cooperative hall, OAU. Expected speakers are Tobi Famutimi, Fola Folayan amongst others. This is definitely not an event you should miss so prepare to be wowed.

On Resumption: Management, ASUU and Students’ Union

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, OAU chapter, through their Chairman, Dr. Aborisade has said that Lectures for Second semester won’t commence until November 9th, 2015.

According to ACJ News Reel, a news arm of the Association of Campus Journalists, the Chairman of ASUU informed the Students’ union president, Akande Omotayo, on Thursday, October 22nd that lectures won’t commence on Resumption.

“In reaction to the management’s decision and position (to resume by November 1st), the ASUU Chairman,OAU Chapter, Dr. Aborisade informed OAU Students’ Union President Yesterday (Thursday) via a phone call that even if school resumes for Second semester by November 1, lectures would not commence until November 9th, 2015.” ACJ News Reel reported

Also, Management is said to have declined a ‘30 days rest’ demand by ASUU. However, on the Calendar for the Rain Semester by the Senate, lecture is to commence on November 2nd.

Still on Resumption, Students’ Union, through the PRO, Ojedokun Emmanuel Kant, has demanded that the hostels be renovated before Rain semester can begin. According to the union, renovation of the hostels is the only valid access to resumption.
