#OAUDecides2015: Students troops out en-mass to vote candidates of their choice. (See Pictures)

Unlike the last election that brought Ibikunle into power this one seems to have made history as students of different faculties came in their thousands to vote the candidate of their choice.

The election slated for 8am didn’t start until about 4 hours later. Different batches of students queued from noon till evening. Chants of candidates name filled the air as their different agents went about convincing people on who to vote for.

The ballot paper finished in some faculties like Social science, Admin… leaving students stranded, hissing and unhappy. Some were disappointed and had to leave – while some started reading while they await even more ballot papers. Election couldn’t hold in the college of health science because of the late arrival and the reaction of the students.

#OAUDecides2015: Great Ife Electoral Commission Disappoints Students

The CEC elections slated for today were hit by allegations of rigging and favouritism in favour of a particular candidate.
At the Faculty of Law, the stronghold of a particular candidate, it turned out there were more ballot papers in comparison to other equally or higher populated faculties. Over 600 ballot papers were brought to the faculty. This was a sharp contrast to the Faculty of Technology, the home of a strong contender, which got just 149 ballot papers. The College of Health Sciences got around 25 ballot papers. It should be noted that with the withdrawal of some contestants, the race for presidency is now between TY and Phakoo!

The electoral commissioner, while at the Faculty of Law, said that they had awarded the contract to a printer at Ibadan to produce 10,000 ballot papers, but only about 2,500 were ready this morning.
Some supporters of the contestant favoured majority of Law students said they supported him because they didn’t want to spend extra years on campus. To them the other contender was a leftist, who would lead an unnecessary confrontation with the school management. On the other hand, the supporters of the purported leftist, saw the other contender as a management stooge.

In the meantime, you can trust OAUChristians, to keep you up to date as events quickly unfold.

UJCM OAU President, Muyiwa Olasehinde Urges Christians To Participate In The Ongoing Students Union Election

image

We caught up with newly appointed UJCM President sometimes last month – and we got to find out a whole lot about him. From sports to Academics, to relationships to politics. You’ll enjoy this. Read.

Q: Can we meet you sir

Pastor Muyiwa: I am Olasehinde Oluwamuyiwa Ayokunle. I’m from Ondo town in Ondo state. I’m the first of 2 boys and from a monogamous home. I was born in Kano and I grew up and schooled in Kano. Then, came from Kano to OAU, Dentistry. I’m in 500L.

Q: What are the past roles/positions you have held in campus fellowships?

I am a member of the Gospel Students Fellowship. I was the General Secretary and currently the president.

Q: What was your reaction when you knew you’d be the next UJCM President?

Well… I had never been one to shy away from responsibilities. However, when I got to know I had been divinely selected, it was quite difficult to bear. There is always the burden of leadership for anyone in any leadership office, much more for a student too. However, it really did not come to me as a surprise because it was like a fulfilment of prophecies that had gone years before.

Q: You run a blog, TheDesertFlood.com. What was the inspiration behind it?

I am an ardent writer. I have been writing since I was young. I remember I tried drawing and designing a magazine for my primary school then. However, 15 years ago, I met an uncle who changed my concept about writing. For TheDesertFlood.com, I was looking for a platform that was trans-geographical. It had many names but sometime last year, I settled for TheDesertFlood. It was a time when I had a writers’ block. It meant something unusual. I rebranded the platform for writers like myself and a few other folks to express themselves. We are still a small blog compared to other Christian blogs around.

Q: What’s your take on politics in OAU?

Concerning OAU Campus Politics, I have always believed that there needs to be a rebranding in our style of politics. It does not have to be about antagonism all of the time. We should look out more for representative unionism that is managed by folks with a strong desire to serve and effectively represent the interest of the students at all levels. Jesus said whoever wants to be the chief must be the servant of all. I believe that the time has come when the SU politics should be manned by those who do not just want to make a name for themselves but who are out to serve the generality of students.

I want to specially encourage all students to be active participants in the ongoing Students Union elections. Make sure you cast your votes for candidates you know you can trust and who have a track record of righteousness and integrity because Righteousness exalts a nation (people) but sin is a reproach.

Q: Over the years, Christians have not been actively participating in Politics. Do you have anything to say about that?

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. We need to understand that even though we say our kingdom is not of this world, we are still in this world, and are affected by the systems and rules of this world. Christians have a responsibility to perform their civic duties by actively getting involved in politics at all levels and casting their votes at elections. We must discern the mind of God and elect His will and effect His counsel. I also want to encourage students everywhere to aspire for political offices.

Q: Do you foresee challenges before you in trying to achieve your goals for UJCM under your administration and how do you seek to overcome them?

If God did it before, He will do it again. We won’t do things because of public opinion but because God has asked us to do it. Challenges are a part of whatever system but by God we can run through a troop and leap over a wall.

Q: We would Love you to respond to the following issues raised by some members of the OAU community which we have heard about:
– The reckless driving and maintenance of fellowship buses, because we often hear of fellowship buses involved in accidents during retreats.

It is definitely easy for us to become armchair critics without a firm understanding of the fundamental issues in any subject. Basically, I will encourage our Transport Secretaries to be more careful, pay more attention to skill, experience and maintenance of buses. Those buses do a lot for about 10-12hours daily. We must ensure only those who are trained and experienced drive these buses. We also should not take unnecessary risks. If the buses are not in a good shape to travel, an alternative should be sought for. More importantly, we should also obey traffic rules. If the traffic rules say to Use your seatbelt, then you must obey. We must ensure that anyone who wants to drive must have a driver’s license.

Q: You have a flair for football, tell us about it.

I am an Arsenal fan. I have been one for more than 10 years. I fell in love with The Invincibles and Thierry Henry. I really don’t watch matches now unless I’m home on holidays. And of course, I look forward to the restoration of the great times at Arsenal FC.

Q: Are you in a relationship sir and if no, how soon?

We know that it is not in the prerogative or jurisdiction of any man to direct his times. Our times and seasons are in God’s hands. When it is time for a relationship, it happen between God, She and I

Q: How does UJCM seek to work with other organizations on Campus?

We receive so much invitations and requests for partnerships. It is practically impossible to be involved in every single programme and requests to collaborate that comes our way, especially as we have a vision we are running with.
‘’ Does it tally with our vision?” “Is it timely?” Those are the questions we ask ourselves at every phase. What was remarkable about LEAP Conference was that we got almost all fellowships on campus involved with the conference and we sure look forward to bigger partnerships with other fellowships.

Q: There are currently 24 fellowships on campus. What are the criterias for adding more churches?

Membership is open to any Christian Student Fellowship in OAU, which believes, teaches and abides by all wholesome Bible doctrines.

Q: Word for the OAU Community at large

We sense so much a coming revival upon our land. God is bringing us into a prepared place where His name is lifted high above all other names. This is a time God is raising young men and women. It is a season of all round Soundness – in all facets of your life. Watch out for an increased move of God upon this land.

Seriously, What’s The Perfect Sex Position? #PSP

image

We woke up this morning (Tuesday, Feb. 10th) to a Twitter mention from @RHEMAWORDntwk asking “What the perfect sex position is?”

And we told them the truth…

We are students, unmarried… only the couples can tell

One of our followers was like…

Na so. Abegi

RhemaWord insisted that we talk; that we have “God’s word teaching us all things”

@RHEMAWORDntwk: But we are Christians, and we have God’s word teaching us ‘all things.’ So let’s talk! What’s the PerfectSexPosition? #PSP

So we started “talking…”

If the church doesn’t talk about it, who should?

If you don’t hear it from the church, it ain’t legit!

#PSP

“@RHEMAWORDntwk: God’s people don’t only perish for lack of knowledge, d knowledge of the righteous delivers them.Let’s talk about sex! #PSP

We were still “talking” when Victor came… according to him, we have stopped being “brethrens”. Sex positions is not something we should be discussing in church.

Pls don’t let’s start confusing eachoda sir… Sexposition 2 me is not a topic dat should be discussed in church!

But RhemaWord waved it off and replied..

If the church fails to talk about it, lending the voice of God’s word to the sex topic, where should brethren then learn? #PSP

As it stands now, we have not answered the question “What’s the perfect sex position?” because  Pastor Peter Ayo Alabi will be answering it himself on Sunday 15th February by 5pm at Pit Theatre, Obafemi Awolowo university.

You don’t want to miss out, seriously.

“Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.”  – Abraham Lincoln.

This is just a piece of my mind to those at the helm of affairs in this country. As much as I remain a loyalist to the leadership and authority of this nation, and as much as I desist from blaspheming, or speaking wrong about what they have been doing, I feel it is of utmost importance that I speak in this regard, so I won’t be found guilty of keeping my thoughts to myself at the end.

Why in the name of GOD would you declare that students should not be allowed to go home to their parents’ houses during this period of elections? Like it or not, there will always be some miscreants who have been embedded with the lifestyle of evil and chaos, and they would love to perpetrate their evils in students environments where they are likely to see like minds. GOD forbids that someone like that should come visiting in my school, and I’m caught in the midst of the tantrum that follows. What would be my fate?

Many other students like me are scared of this presumptuous assumption, and majority of them are packing their bags and baggage already, and set to leave for home at the turn of the weekend. The only fear we have is this: Our lecturers have a certain tendency to be very rash in their decision making process on matters like this. And it’s only a matter of time before they start taking attendances due to the scanty number of attendant students in the classrooms.

Let me also identify another important point for you to consider in this predicament of ours: It is no news that majority of students in Federal Universities are involved in the INEC Adhoc Recruitment, and most of them are waiting eagerly for the elections to start, so they can get over with the exercise, and collect their stipends, and continue with their lives. The ones who didn’t sign up to be part of the staffs have mainly registered to vote in their respective home localities, and this “NO-BREAK” is not acceptable in any way towards the realization of any of these aforementioned plans.

This call is going out to whoever is involved: LET US GO HOME, OR ELSE WE WOULD TAKE CERTAIN DECISIONS BY OURSELVES, AND CREATE OUR OWN LAWS BY OUR OWN POWER, AND GIVE NO REGARDS WHATSOEVER TO YOU IN AUTHORITY.

According to what Abraham Lincoln said in the quote I put up at the beginning of this article, your limiting our freedom is directly and proportionately tilting to the end that you yourselves are people not worthy of the same freedom.

I will not fail, as I conclude, to reiterate this point clearly with this quote from Henry Ford which goes thus:

“The real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.”

If we want to have history repeat itself like as in the past, then we would have at the end failed the ultimate test of wisdom.

A word is enough for the wise.

Thanks,

Adesina David (iamadesina)
