Students’ Union President,TY, Gets Reinstated After Two weeks

In their sitting today at Awo Cafe by 4pm, the SRC has revoked the suspension of TY, President of the Great Ife Students Union.

In a sitting on the 1st of August, TY was suspended for not following due process in processing a letter requesting sponsorship from the school management.

A few days ago, TY had made a statement describing his suspension as severe. At the sitting, 49 voted in favour of the revocation of his suspension, while 6 voted against.

TY Finally Speaks on Suspension

After close to two weeks of silence, the suspended President of the Great Ife Students Union, Omotayo Akande, aka TY, has finally spoken on his suspension.

In a statement released on the 12th of August, he said that the invitation letter for the UN conference was received by the Assistant Secretary-General, Kelvino and then forwarded to the Financial Secretary,  AY SUG, during the mid-semester break. By the time he got the letter and was able to formally apply, the deadline was approaching. A letter was then drafted requesting for school sponsorship.  When the time came to append signatures, it was discovered that neither the Secretary-General nor Assistant we’re around. He said,” All members of the CEC present at the students’ union building we’re very much aware of my invitation except for those that travelled”.

He admitted that the non-appending of the necessary signatures was a “constitutional aberration “. He also said that the parliament should have been informed, but this was during the mid-semester break.  He admitted that an alternative could have through bulk SMS. He said,” Signing alone flawed democracy,  and our Union’s long tradition. I APOLOGISE UNRESERVEDLY”.

He finally raised the question as to whether his suspension was actually a vendetta. He noted that in a Parliament of 150 Honourables, only 56 were on seat, and 29 voted in favour of his suspension. While commending the Parliament for implementing check and balance, he raised the issue of the severity of the punishment. He said,”This therefore   places serious question of political interest and objectivity on the suspension…several political gladiators have taken advantage of my mistake to score political goals”.

He concluded by appreciating all who had stood by him, and promised that he had learnt his lesson.

Why Can’t A Female Run For The Students’ Union President?

Its almost a rhetorical question, the most recurring answer I get is “Hmm No” when I asked girls if they would go for the post of Students’ Union president . When I asked why some said they were not “politically inclined”, some said they would rather go for the post of Vice President ,some said they couldn’t cope with the challenges that comes with the post, some used their need to protect their CGPA as an excuse,a great number believed it’s a guy’s post and that a female wouldn’t be voted in as the president because despite the fact we live in a 21st century world men are still 17th century orientated .

Ever since OAU’s Students’ Union was founded in 1962 there had never been a female president ever so the question again is why? Only one female attempted,Mama Agenda in 2010 which she lost. There are just a few political oriented females in OAU who could successfully contend for the post and I believe it comes from old age belief that women are not cut out for rational thoughts, that they are emotional beings who lets their emotion get in the way of their reasoning.

If Oprah decides to contest for Presidency would guys vote for her? That is a question I know will generate a lot of debate but really what makes Oprah different from TY? She could do a better job if given the chance, which she will with her being in charge now.

But really the issue lies with the females,we need to stand up and preach the need for an understanding of politics, just because they are men doesn’t mean they should make all the decisions for us. We need to have a say in everything that involves us,we need a larger percentage of women in the Parliament,we need to get interested in politics because as Will Rogers said: Women are not the weak, frail little flowers that they are advertised. There has never been anything invented yet, including war, that a man would enter into, that a woman wouldn’t, too.

By the way I am not a Feminist because these days there so many version of it, I am just a lady who believes that everyone should have equal rights and not be judge for a post because of their gender but by their character and if that makes me a Feminist then Feminist I am.

Believing in you is the best gift you can ever give yourself.

Parliament Suspends OAU’s Students’ Union President

In their sitting of the 31st of July through to the 1st of August, the Students’ Representative Council suspended the President, Akande Omotayo for a month.

The President was suspended for not following due procedure in his request for school sponsorship to attend the 7th Millennium Campus Conference, hosted by the United Nations. The said letter, which requested over 0.6 million naira sponsorship was sent without the assent of the General Secretary and the notice of other CEC (Central Executive Council) members.

A motion was first moved for a two weeks suspension. A counter-motion was raised for the President to make a public apology and release a press statement in line with it. The vote was 19-18. At that point, the sitting was disrupted by Gallerians. When calm was restored, the motion for a month suspension was successfully raised. The sitting started around 5pm on the 31st of July and ended by 3am on the 1st of August.

Great Ife Parliament Reconvenes after Two weeks Indefinite Suspension

After two weeks of indefinite suspension, the Great Ife SU Parliament will finally reconvene on the 18th of June by 4pm at Awo Cafe.

According to a an honorable member of the house, a late message was sent to the parliamentarians for the purpose of reconvening.

“Revolutionary greetings! This is to inform you that the Parliament reconvenes tomorrow Thursday 18th June, 2015 by 4pm prompt at Awo Hall Cafe. Apology for late notification” the message read
The suspension was triggered when several members of the House stampeded the sitting over a perceived unfair and uneven selection of committee members by the Speaker.
It is hoped that the next sitting will resolve this issue and deliberate on the resolutions of the Congres
