Students’ Union’s Press Release As Regards Resumption

OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER
AS REGARDS RESUMPTION
While the University management has the prerogative as the constituted authority to decide on closure, breaks and resumption, the smooth running of an ivory tower is dependent on the collaborative effort of all the component stakeholders.
Our University stakeholders include the Principal Officers (the University authorities), Academic staffs, Non Academic Staffs and the students (the major stakeholders), the contribution of any of the afore-mentioned cannot be undermined.
The University management issued a circular dated 16th July, 2015 announcing the resumption of students from the Mid-semester break. NASU, in its release dated 17th July 2015 assert the continuation of its industrial action against the non-payment of their 64 month earned allowances and promised to entrench practical actions in the event that their strike is not called off on Tuesday. This was corroborated in the crucial meeting between the leadership of NASU and Students’ Union earlier today.
In the eventuality that the NASU strike is not called-off on/before Tuesday. The leadership of the Union on the following grounds;
That the continued industrial action might ground vehicular movement, thus, making it strenuous for our students coming from different parts of the nation with their bags and baggage’s conveying themselves from campus gate to their various halls of residence.
That the likelihood of a physical confrontation between NASU, Students, State Security and the University authority should not put our students to become victims of seen and unforeseen circumstances.
That prior to the announcement of resumption the main cause of giving a mid-semester break (NASU Strike) has not been addressed.
That the continuation of NASU strike is likely to prevent the full operation of the health Centre, and jettison academic and environmental welfare condition.

OUR POSITION
The Students’ Union hereby ADVISES that students should stay back at home, to observe the outcome of Tuesday and Wednesday’s Nasu/Management face-off.

“Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.”  – Abraham Lincoln.

This is just a piece of my mind to those at the helm of affairs in this country. As much as I remain a loyalist to the leadership and authority of this nation, and as much as I desist from blaspheming, or speaking wrong about what they have been doing, I feel it is of utmost importance that I speak in this regard, so I won’t be found guilty of keeping my thoughts to myself at the end.

Why in the name of GOD would you declare that students should not be allowed to go home to their parents’ houses during this period of elections? Like it or not, there will always be some miscreants who have been embedded with the lifestyle of evil and chaos, and they would love to perpetrate their evils in students environments where they are likely to see like minds. GOD forbids that someone like that should come visiting in my school, and I’m caught in the midst of the tantrum that follows. What would be my fate?

Many other students like me are scared of this presumptuous assumption, and majority of them are packing their bags and baggage already, and set to leave for home at the turn of the weekend. The only fear we have is this: Our lecturers have a certain tendency to be very rash in their decision making process on matters like this. And it’s only a matter of time before they start taking attendances due to the scanty number of attendant students in the classrooms.

Let me also identify another important point for you to consider in this predicament of ours: It is no news that majority of students in Federal Universities are involved in the INEC Adhoc Recruitment, and most of them are waiting eagerly for the elections to start, so they can get over with the exercise, and collect their stipends, and continue with their lives. The ones who didn’t sign up to be part of the staffs have mainly registered to vote in their respective home localities, and this “NO-BREAK” is not acceptable in any way towards the realization of any of these aforementioned plans.

This call is going out to whoever is involved: LET US GO HOME, OR ELSE WE WOULD TAKE CERTAIN DECISIONS BY OURSELVES, AND CREATE OUR OWN LAWS BY OUR OWN POWER, AND GIVE NO REGARDS WHATSOEVER TO YOU IN AUTHORITY.

According to what Abraham Lincoln said in the quote I put up at the beginning of this article, your limiting our freedom is directly and proportionately tilting to the end that you yourselves are people not worthy of the same freedom.

I will not fail, as I conclude, to reiterate this point clearly with this quote from Henry Ford which goes thus:

“The real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.”

If we want to have history repeat itself like as in the past, then we would have at the end failed the ultimate test of wisdom.

A word is enough for the wise.

Thanks,

Adesina David (iamadesina)

OAU’S Students’ Union Releases Financial Infographic Report Of Projects On Campus.

The Union’s Pro, Bamidale Oludare, published an infographics on the Students’ Union website on Wednesday, 28th January showing an analysis of major union projects.

From the infographics, which was titled “setting the records straight”, the total amount of money spent soo far – projects accomplished and ongoing ones were displayed with picture evidences.

Two buses with the purpose of “internal operations” were purchased at 1.8 million naira. The constuction of AAwo and Fajuyi hall bridges cost over three hundred thousand naira with 90% completion.

The infographic also showed that the HEC, Hall Executive Council, have been disbursed 400,000 naira, part of their 15% entitlement to the students’ union budget.

Presntly, the “revenue in the cover of the union” is put at 5.920 million naiara even as the union hasn’t fully paid for all of its projects.

The Students’ union also stated that it is the right of every students to know what their money is been spent on.

“As due-paying students, it’s your right to know how and what your dues are used for; It’s no longer the time in history when our collective resources are spent on irrelevants and unreproductive engagements.”

Where is Olori?

Ever since we resumed this semester, on the 4th of this month (January), I have taken care to become very observant about things going on around campus. Hardly has any incident gone past my nose, ears and eyes, and I must confess that this issue is very critical and needs urgent attention from the appropriate quarters.

From various quarters, there has been a recurrent question people have been asking both myself, and among themselves.

Where is Olori?

Majority of the students have been concerned about the sudden stealth mode our ever vibrant Vice-President has decided to operate on in recent times. Most of part last semester, we saw her every now and then coordinating Students Union affairs, but there has been little or no show from the VP this year. Some persons are even wondering if this is as a result of the pact signed earlier between herself and Mr President late last year (See post here), and speculating that probably this is some part of the deal that she play a background role?

Someone should please speak up to this issue of Olori, and let the air be made clear for us to fully understand the state of things….

I rest my case.

OAU Edges Towards “Civilization” As Hall Executives Refuses To Beat And “Parade” A Thief

At about 3:00pm yesterday, 26 January, 2015, residents of Akintola Hall, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife apprehended a lady, Ajao Kehinde Adetola, in the act of taking cloth materials belonging to undisclosed people. She was said to have been accosted by a vigilant student who later called the attention of fellow students and the hall’s porters.

In the age long tradition of OAU, the students demanded that the suspect be beaten and paraded as they also accused her of several similar thefts. The hall’s management declined the students’ request and called the University security unit to take over the situation. Students resident in the hall and the hall’s executives in turn called the Students’ Union Central Executive Council Security unit to assert their demands.

In the ensuing impasse, a consensus was eventually reached for the S.U security unit to take her to the S.U building for a brief interrogation and an official statement, after which she would be handed over to the university security for further pursuit of her case. These steps were adequately taken.

However, at the university senate building where the security unit has its office, more revelations were brought to light about the lady. She claimed to have finished a diploma course in Local Government two years ago.
Some ladies (names withheld) came into the security office to testify that one of them was robbed by her in 2012 while they were in 200 level in Moremi Hall (they are currently in 400 level).
While Kehinde was writing a statement, it was discovered that one of the phones in her possession, which she had earlier claimed ownership, was stolen. The owner was traced immediately and she came over to the security office to testify that the phone was stolen from her last Sunday in Akintola Hall.

Matters again got to a loggerheads between the university security unit and S.U security unit as to what the next step about Kehinde would be. After so much argument, it was agreed that Kehinde would stay over at the university security office overnight, and this morning, Tuesday 27th January, Students’ representatives would meet with the security at the old security unit office at Utility building to further the case.
