OAU’S Students’ Union President Will Revisit Last Year’s Increment In School Fees

wpid-received_817366368358157.jpeg

The TY-led administration will be revisiting the #OAUSaysNo increment that shut down the school for 2 months last session.

The Students’ Union president, Akande Omotayo, while giving his speech at the swearing-in ceremony on Thursday, May 28 said that the increased school fees doesn’t correlate with the welfare of the students.

“Our Students cannot continue to pay for the increment in school fees having not yielded any commensurate improvement in the welfare condition. This has made the increment itself questionable and unconscionable.” He said

The final year law student also demanded a committee of students and managements to review and investigate the last increment.

“We hereby demand for a committee of students and management to be called the School Fees Review Committee that will investigate the justification of last increment and analyze the university funding and expenditure. The committee will come out with a report to tell us if the university management is indeed broke and if they are, have they exhausted all other channels of generating funds? After their findings, they must initiate the procedure for a review.”

Hall Executives Demands Their Share Of Ibikunle’s 6.2 Million Naira

The ERC, in a recent press statement, lent their voice to the demand of the Hall Executive Councils(HEC) of the eight halls of residence in OAU to their constitutionally-guaranteed share of the budget. Section 41(3) of the Great Ife Students’ Union Constitution gives the halls of residence the right to “at least fifteen percent of the CEC budget”. This would amount to #930,000 out of #6.2 million, the total amount released to the Ibikunle-led SUG by the DSA and the bank balance left by the previous  administration.
It should be remembered that the SRC in her sitting on the 12th of this month, passed a resolution that the said monies be released within 72 hours. That deadline expired on the 15th of January.
The Ibikunle-led CEC did not release the funds, because the funds had been spent on special projects, as they claimed. The ERC described this argument as “inane and fraudulent”. The ERC saw this as usurping the responsibility of the university management, which had functional departments, like the popular Maintenence Unit, vested with these responsibilities. In the statement, the ERC said:

A pro-student, vibrant students’ union is expected to call for appropriate spending of university resources; instead of covering for the failures of the university management.

The ERC described the inspiration for the CEC’s action as ‘self-serving’, with consequences like ‘Inflation of actual cost of projects, kickbacks and outright looting”. The two link bridges between Faj and Awo, and Faj and Sports, were cited.
The statement criticised the SUG for its focus on money-related issues, rather than student welfare and called on the Great Ife students to join the campaign for financial transparency. The HECs were themselves not spared as they were described as ‘selfish’, for limiting their demands to subvention instead of supporting the call for a Congressional probe of the Student Union finances.
The ERC, in the press statement, described the argument that the Budget & Finance Committee of the SRC be saddled with this responsibility as “mischievious and criminally-inclined”. This was because the B&F Committee, and the SRC as a whole, were instrumental in the ratification of the budget without input from the gallerians.
In conclusion, the ERC reiterated her support to the move to restore vibrant students’ union, and called for greater student involvement.

SUG Tours OAU, Debunks 18 Million Naira Rumour

image

As the curtain gradually comes down on the Ibikunle/Olori led Student’s Union administration in Obafemi Awolowo University, the Union’s leadership thought it necessary to conduct a press tour on the projects embarked upon by right from the start of their administration. In light of this, leadership of the Union called upon various press outfits on campus to see for themselves, firsthand their various achievements and the proposed ones already on-going.

The Secretary General of the Union, Shittu Ibrahim was also quick to point out some misconceptions about funds by stating emphatically:

“There is nothing like N18 million anywhere in the budget we made”

During the tour, the press bodies were able to take note of the following developments:

  • The purchase of two buses (“Jet 2” and “Jet 3” of which “Jet 2” is yet to arrive.
  • The purchase of DSTV for the SUB TV room.
  • Purchase of an additional television to the SUB.
  • Facelift of the SUB Conference room.
  • The construction of pedestrian bridges between Akintola & Fajuyi Halls and between Fajuyi & Awolowo Hall (which are yet to be completed).
  • Bore holes in Angola and Mozambique Halls.

Other proposed projects included:

  • A 1,532 bedspace mixed students’ hall of residence (the point of this is however that the current administration wants to start the project for subsequent administrations to continue and complete)
  • An OAU App in the mould of Facebook and LinkedIn is also been worked on and the developer confirmed that it was at about 95% completion.

It is also exigent to note that in the analysis of the funds generated and expended, the leadership were not exact on their expenditure, which led to the call by the pressmen that the Union leadership should come out with a comprehensive financial statement this new week.

OAU Students Excited as President,VP Unites.

image

A large number of concerned students took to the social media recently stating how excited they are about Ibikunle and Olori working together as a team again.

The excitement was directed towards the fact that the unity of the union will be restored, congress will be called, common enemies on campus will be fought and there will be peace amongst students; as a Facebook user has put it.

It’s been about 3 weeks they both signed an agreement to put an end to their dispute. They haven’t been spotted together in the open since then, but we believe everything is fine.
