OAU Students Air Grievances Against The School Management On Social Media #SaveOAU

For a long while now, students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife have bitterly complained about living under formidable conditions supposedly provided by the management of the school. On the 30th of November, after a congress which had been called a few days before, the Students’ Union of the school took to boycotting lectures with a peaceful protest to make their grievances known to the school management and to the world at large.

Some of the reasons for the protest were the poor welfare conditions experienced by students on campus. These include inconsistent electricity supply, scarcity of clean water, dilapidated toilets and bathrooms, which obviously need renovation, re-fumigating of the halls of residences which were fumigated in October but weren’t effectively fumigated and some other reasons.

On Tuesday, 1st December, 2015, the Management of Obafemi Awolowo University shut down the school immediately with claims of the school having a “mid-semester break”. There are speculations that the management shut down the school because they received a security information that the students planned to disrupt the upcoming coronation of the New Ooni of Ife in order to seize the opportunity to get a chance to discuss with dignitaries that would be present at the globally-recognized ceremony. The President of the Students’ Union, in person of Mr Omotayo Akande, (TY), recently debunked all claims of there being a plan to disrupt the upcoming coronation ceremony.

Students have taken the measure embarked on by the management as one to silent them so as not to let the world know about the extremely horrendous conditions on campus. The students of Obafemi Awolowo University have, however, decided to take the road popular and efficient-the Social Media- as it is thought that the world could be invited to intervene in bringing back wellness to the school.

Below are spine-chilling pictures of the state of school’s halls of residence as at December, 2015.

Is Great Ife Truly Great?

image

Greatness lies not in being strong, but the right use of strength. Greatness is not just about size, brawn or the ability to intimidate, but in the ability to fully deploy all tools available for the achievement of the intended goal.

By way of introduction, let me ask, dear colleagues, are we really GREAT? Is this Great Ife? Is this the best Great Ife can offer? Was a lecture boycott and closure of school gate the best thing our collective intellect could think of? Ask your conscience, if it still breathes, couldn’t there have been a more effective way of doing things?

Call me reactionary, conservative, I don’t care. I stand for what I believe in. I’m not like some SU leaders who have feet of clay that can be washed away by the mob. Since we claim to have been agitating for better welfare conditions, how on Earth would a lecture boycott and forceful kicking out of students from Angola and Moz achieved that? If a leadership has to force its followers to follow it, then clearly such leadership has no legitimacy and has lost the ability to convince its followers to stand by it. And yet these ones call themselves “Intellectual Fighters for Emancipation”.

.

We could have effectively gotten our message across by effective use of the social media, using trendy hashtags, engaging the press, while having meetings with the school management. We could have triggered a social media uproar, causing embarrassment to the school management, and gaining concessions from them. All it took was some pictures of raggedy beds from UNILAG for both the UNILAG and OAU school management to embark on a fumigation exercise.

Like me, hate me, but I’ll still say it. The “radical” approach is dead. The last time it was a powerful weapon against the school management was in 1999. In today’s world, wars are not won by the size of one’s army or their noise, but the brain of the General.

School Activities Halted As OAU Students Protest

After a two-day black out on OAU campus last week, the students decided at an impromptu conference that held on Friday,  26th November to protest the deplorable welfare state on campus as well as other incidents such as the fire outbreak in Moremi hall late last year and the disappearance of fire extinguishers reinforced this decision. The student populace decided on a peaceful protest which was to start with a lecture boycott on the 30th of November.

The management, however, issued a circular promising better welfare conditions on a condition that all activities return to normal and also threatened to scrap out the session if the protest conditions continues.

Currently students are at the campus gate demanding an improved conditions in living standards on OAU campus. See pictures below:

University Shutdown Will be Decided by the Management

Chairman of the Non Academic Staff Union, Obafemi Awolowo University Chapter (NASU OAU), Comrade Wole Adewunmi has said that the university being shutdown due to the ongoing protest is for the management to decide.

In an interview with @oau-olofofo, he claimed that NASU is maintaining order in its protest and also manning the school gates in other to avoid theft.

“That one (the university being shutdown) is left for the management to decide. Our own is to maintain order as we protest, we are also manning the university gate, and that is part of our job. We cannot just open the gate while there are no activities on campus, because anyone can just go in and out of the university and cart away with the university property, so it is better we lock up the gate, so within this period of protest, we will make sure there won’t be any case of theft that may result from the struggle.” He said

NASU has been on strike for the past one week and has put to a halt every activity on campus during this period in other to exercise its frustration over it’s 64 months unpaid allowance. The body recently aligned with the Students’ union for students to boycott lectures and in return, water and light will be restored back to campus.

NASU Chairman Grants Exclusive Interview

A #teamOAU Twitter handle @Oau_olofofo was able to gather more information on the strike, clear the rumors about the money FG released to be paid to them, the School management response and the fate of the students in an exclusive interview with NASU chairman, Comrade Wole Adewunmi on 9th July 2015.
Check out the interview below:
Good morning sir.

Good morning.

May we meet you sir

This is comrade Wole Adewunmi, NASU chairman for Obafemi Awolowo University.

You’re welcome sir. There have been conflicting reports in d newspapers and among people, saying different stories concerning the ongoing protest staged by NASU, so we want to get first hand information from you. What exactly is NASU fighting for currently?
The fight is based on the NASU – Federal government agreement of 2009. The agreement goes thus: There are some allowances being packed into the agreement as well as some other things, so out of these allowances, the federal government instructed individual universities to start implementation from 2013 February, and since then our own university has never deemed it fit to even start the implementation. Apart from that, part of these allowances being packed into that agreement was responsibility allowance. We also have hazard allowance, field trip allowance, and some other allowances, which are 8 in total, for various categories of workers, there are some that concern only ASUU, and there are some that concern administrative staffs alone. So, it is that of administrative that concerns us (NASU) and out of that one, the one that the school management knows is beneficial to them is the one they implemented right from the very beginning, and that is the responsibility allowance. The responsibility allowance concerns those people who head one sector or the other. Those who benefit from it are the registrar, bursar, librarian, and the Vice Chancellor because they head special offices in the university, so those ones have been implemented by themselves and for themselves, and left the ones that concern the generality (NASU) undone, which is the hazard allowance. The hazard allowance is what we are currently fighting for, and we have been on it since 2012. Till today, they just keep promising and promising without any fulfilment and their argument was that federal government have not released money to pay or to implement these earned allowances. But, where did they get money to implement the responsibility allowance?

The university management made a press release on the 2nd of July stating that the federal government released 2.8 billion Naira, which NASU said it was meant to settle their unpaid earned allowances while the management said the aforementioned money was meant for project implementation.

NASU did not say the money was meant for earned allowances. There was a release from the chairman of BMC, a body created to oversee how the money will be spent on the projects. We are well aware of the fact that the money is meant for project implementation. This money has been with them since 2013 but we are yet to see the result of whatever they used the money for.

Why has it taken NASU this long to voice out their case?, And has NASU been in constant dialogue with the university management?

Constantly! We’ve been having dialogues and series of meetings here and there. They kept promising, promising and promising until today, when we have finally realised that they (university management) are not serious and they do not know what they are doing. So,  it is better we swing into action because if we were to count the months now, it is about 64 months. How can you owe somebody an arrears of 64 months?

In the past few days, have you been able to meet with the Vice Chancellor of the university?

We met with them yesterday,  and we had a discussion. The registrar was representing the university management . They made a promise and documented and signed on the agreement. Our members however weren’t satisfied with the decision. So,  this morning I met with our members and we unanimously decided to continue with the protest.

Have NASU been getting support from other unions in the university, or is it a lone struggle for NASU?

Individually, most of the unions are supporting us as a body, some unions however; like ASUU and NAT, said their national headquarters haven’t given them the go ahead.

So, is this now a total paralysis of school activities?

Yes, that is exactly what it is until our demands are met.

There’s a possibility of the university being shutdown due to this ongoing protest which is already in its 5th day, is that what you want sir?

That one is left for the management to decide. Our own is to maintain order as we protest, we are also manning the university gate, and that is part of our job. We cannot just open the gate while there are no activities on campus, because anyone can just go in and out of the university and cart away with the university property, so it is better we lock up the gate, so within this period of protest, we will make sure there won’t be any case of theft that may result from the struggle.

Thank you sir.

Thank you, I appreciate your support.

No car was allowed to go in or come out for about 8 hours as the staff held the gates with locks and barricades.

People were however allowed to walk the 5km long Road one. Some lectures held and few academic activities still thrived.

Here are some pictures of today’s protest action.

LASU Reversed School Fees Re-ignites #OAUSaysNo?

image

The LASU fee reversal that was announced yesterday (Thursday) by the Lagos state government got some attention from Great Ife Students as many believe there is still hope for already dying #OAUSaysNo struggle.

“The Lagos State Government had, earlier in 2011, increased the fees from N25,000 to N198,000 for humanities and education, while medical students were to pay N350,000. After the prolonged protests, the state government approved a reduction by 34 to 60 per cent. With that reduction, students would have ended up paying between N76,750 and N158,250 depending on their faculty and year of study. But, the State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola in a convocation ceremony yesterday ordered the fee reversal to 25,000 Naira.

Since the announcements, students have since then aired their opinions and discomfort as most have openly condemned OAU’s lackadaisical attitude towards the prolonged struggle. An online user described the students as “lacking faith in possibilities,” he furthered accused the leaders of choosing sides as to why progress haven’t been made so far; and concluded that oau students with their weak minds got too scared to pull the struggle through. “OAU Students might be losing their struggle against ‪#‎feeHike”

With undaunted hope, many still insisted that until the management reverses the fees, school won’t resume; As an Olumide Moyinoluwa Taiwo went on to post “#OAUsaysno… no total reversal, no resumption.” “It is not too late, it took LASU three years to realize this, if we keep our agitation on, we will win. The management might not come out to say anything but they are threatened by our strong agitation…” another user added.

While some think it’s too late to bring all this up, some others believe the Lagos state government’s action was as a result of APC’s 2015 political ambition. Many believe total reversal might not happen in OAU because Lasu’s reversal didn’t happen because of their consistent ‘Aluta.’

An Adejoro Damilare and many others claims the reversal was as a result of 2015 election… “Not as if Fashola really wanted to reduce the fees because of the aluta…the reason he reduced it is becos of 2015”

“The Ekiti loss has now made APC more desperate in their ways, They are ready to do anything to hold on to the states they are in control of”

“Stop comparing oau with Lasu, at least they paid the outrageous fees for 3 years, before it was reduced. It is a game plan by APC. Who is fooling who. ‪#‎onlyinOAU‬ we say ‪#‎no‬ to outrageous fees”

So far, the leadership of the students union have been maintaining its stand on the #OAUSaysNo struggle; even as students clamour for resumption; according to some, sitting at home ain’t fun!

Dr Opadere’s Open Letter To Great Ife Students.

Yesterday evening at about 10:45pm Dr Olaolu Opadere a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University wrote to Great Ife students:
This is particularly for all my students in OAU Ile-Ife, who are presently on
forced holiday, indefinitely. I empathize with you that we are again at this point. Like a joke, two weeks have lapsed since the closure. Be that as it may, it is important for you all to bear this in mind: REDEEM THE TIME. I know, as far as many of you are concerned, your time is being wasted. In a way, I agree with you; but in a greater sense, I don’t. Reason being that except you waste or agree to wasting your time, nobody can. Your time cannot be wasted by proxy or in absentia. You may whine and mutter
all you can, it doesn’t change anything.
The earlier you rouse to the reality that it is incumbent on you to REDEEM ‘your TIME’, the better for you; and then you’d realise that it is a new day. Perhaps you still don’t get my drift! I mean you can turn the negative to positive; and the odd to plus. Keeping your mind stayed on the whys, whats, wheres, etc., of your forced holiday is not going to add any value to your existence. Rather, take advantage of
the TIME to add meaning to your existence. Don’t just eat, sleep, play,
watch movies, complain, or loaf around; make sure you add real value
to your life. What are those things you
would or could have done, if you were
not going to be a lawyer? Auto mechanic, carpenter, fashion designer,
volunteer faith/religious worker, assistant to your parent/guardian in his/her business, or ‘serving’ your parents/guardians … whatever!? Take
advantage of this TIME to learn/do a bit of that. No time is too long or short to add value. I urge that you give deep thought to the following wise words:
“Be careful how you act; these are difficult days. Don’t be fools; be wise: make the most of every opportunity you have ….”
Dear friends, be assured that any/every TIME open to you is an opportunity; yes!, even this forced break. May you be wise indeed. Don’t only explore it, exploit it positively and memorably. That’s what it means to redeem it, otherwise, it will amount to gross waste.
Have a great REDEEMED TIME.

He wrote this on his facebook page his writing was directed to Law students but not only to them you too should…………..
