OAU Management Reinstates Suspended Students.

Yesterday, the 1st of July, 2015 was a day of celebration for the totality of OAU students as The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University reinstated  five of the six students who were suspended for participating in the June 2013 anti- school fees hike protest. It should be noted that nine students were initially suspended but three were reinstated before the end of 2013/2014 academic session . However after a session and four weeks of struggle for their reinstatement five of the suspended six were finally reinstated, though the struggle for the reinstatement of the sixth student is reportedly still on according to Lukmon Fasasi’s blog.

While celebrating his reinstatement  Olusola Engels one of the reinstated students went round the halls of residence and  appreciated the students and authorities that facilitated the reinstatement. He also informed them that the struggle for the reinstatement of the sixth student was still solid.

“We’ve been reinstated, but only five out of six of us got reinstated, I thank the ASUU, NASU, generality of great ife and all parties involved in our reinstatement”.

The president of the OAU Student Union while felicitating with the reinstated students promised the totality of Great Ife Students that the negotiation was still on  for the reinstatement of Olawale Owolabi a.k.a Ogunruku.  He also told the Students that if with the support of OAU students his administration had been able to ensure the reinstatement of  those five students,  definitely with their undivided support they could achieve every other agenda on their manifesto.

“If in 4 weeks of resumption, we have been able to achieve reinstatement, with your undivided support we will achieve  every other agenda on our manifestoes”- SU President, Omotayo Akande a.k.a TY said

OAU’S Students’ Union President Will Revisit Last Year’s Increment In School Fees

wpid-received_817366368358157.jpeg

The TY-led administration will be revisiting the #OAUSaysNo increment that shut down the school for 2 months last session.

The Students’ Union president, Akande Omotayo, while giving his speech at the swearing-in ceremony on Thursday, May 28 said that the increased school fees doesn’t correlate with the welfare of the students.

“Our Students cannot continue to pay for the increment in school fees having not yielded any commensurate improvement in the welfare condition. This has made the increment itself questionable and unconscionable.” He said

The final year law student also demanded a committee of students and managements to review and investigate the last increment.

“We hereby demand for a committee of students and management to be called the School Fees Review Committee that will investigate the justification of last increment and analyze the university funding and expenditure. The committee will come out with a report to tell us if the university management is indeed broke and if they are, have they exhausted all other channels of generating funds? After their findings, they must initiate the procedure for a review.”

Civil Rights Group Demand Reinstatement Of Suspended OAU Students

In a press statement, dated the 4th of March, and signed by Kola Ibrahim, Coordinator,CDWR, Osun State chapter, the group has demanded the reinstatement of the OAU5 by the Prof. Omole-led administration of OAU, who are under “politically-motivated suspension.

Four of these student activists: Olubanji Engels Oluwole, Adabale Olamide, Ademuwagun Johnson, and Sanyaolu Adejuwon were suspended in July 2014.

It was claimed that these students were being victimised for their pivotal role in the restoration of the students’ union, which until last year, was suspended for three years. These four, on the platform of the ERC, had taken a critical stand on the recent fee increment.

The fifth student, Owolabi Olawale, has been suspended since 2011 as a fresh student, for his role in the anti-fee hike by the Prof. Faborode-led administration.
The statement described the action as condemnable. It said:

A University is expected to be a centre of ideas where…the best is produced. Therefore, opposing and dissent views should be welcome, and not silenced…otherwise university will be producing dummies, who will not be able to question anything.

It was also noted that despite the fee increment, infrastructure was still deteriorating, and that access to university education was now limited.

They described tht alleged assault on Habeed Olawale, the chairman of the students’ electoral commission, as reason for the suspension as ridiculous.

This was because the person inquestion had never claimed to be assaulted, and had even graduated. The school management was described as an ‘unsolicited advocate’, for reporting the issue to the police, and suspending them.

The statement concluded by calling on all sympathetic bodies to join the call for the reinstatement and reversal of fee increment.

Lonely and Confused Olori Still Clamours For A Congress…

………………..
………………..

Yemi Olutoye writes..

Earlier today, Oladejo Funmi AKA Olori released a long essay through her Facebook account, in response to comments as regards her person, intentions and duties. She also had some things to say concerning the CEC, the SRC, the management and many others.

On expressing her dissatisfaction over the “anti-students situations” on campus, she pointed that the management and the leadership of the union (the one she is part of) through conscious efforts are the reasons for students inconveniences (light, water, poor grading system, poor transportation etc). As she puts it, “It had been my strong opinion that the failure of power supply on campus is not natural, but of course fraud on the part of the University Management… The approach of the leadership was to join the management in begging for our ‘patience’, instead of mounting pressure on the management to provide a stable alternative to Power supply!”

She defended the very much Criticized Congress she presided over on Oct 2nd; as she claimed it was productive and progressive. Between, the demand of the Students needed to be met. She wrote: “the congress was not only constitutional, but morally correct and rationally warranted. Amid the general demand of students including myself, was a call for a congress to address this abnormality among other disasters befalling the students’ populace.”

As far as she is concerned, the SU president is hiding something since it looks like he his “running away” from calling a congress. She said “If he does not have anything to hide before the congress of students, as transparency and equality is the fulcrum of our union, The president has no reason to fear or dodge the gathering of those who elected him.”

She further claimed the CEC and SRC assisted the management in the “fee hike saga” describing them as incapable and lacking the ability to prioritize issues that are of importance to the students. However, as regards the management, she left them to God.

She reiterated that she would rather stand alone than unite with Union excos who are working against the Student’s collective interests notwithstanding her sex. She made a demand that the president calls for a Congress and unites the students again.

As we have it, Ibikunle seems to be clamouring for the impeachment of the Vice president, as Olori herself puts it. Olori is not happy with Ibikunle becaue of many reasons, and one of those reasons we have been able to establish: He collected a “Greek gift” from Omisore at a time the Union was on the battle field with the management.

As it looks, lonely Olori, who would rather stand alone rather than unite with other union exco seems to be “fighting” with her people, the Leadership of the student union, the SRC, Students Representative Council and the School management, Division of Students affairs. If by chance she gets to read this article, we won’t be surprised if she picks one with us also…

1.30pm. Tunde on the otherhand totally forgot about their agreement to

Ebola: Is Our Isolation Centre Ready On Campus?

bats on trees

……………
……………
By David Adetula

Something that bothers me a lot ever since I got my reasonable thinking cap on is how the so called educated ones cheaply fall victim of the education they have allegedly received. After all, you will ask yourself if these ones can be regarded as Educated Illiterate or what they termed as the education they received was Illiterate Education?

It will surprise you that many of our Youths out there who have passed through the academia do somethings that you will continue to beg your reasoning if they ever stepped into a tertiary institution. As we have it in the younger settings, so also in the older settings. Many of those who even impact these knowledge(Educators) still find it very difficult to apply them at most of the needing periods and you may bear me witness that whenever you try to find out from them why these things are like that, several excuses abound ranging from the kind of non-working environment they find themselves to several other unfavourable conditions.

It is now over two weeks that Nigeria recorded her first mortality courtesy of the deadly Ebola Disease that crept into our territory unaware or probably due to our negligence, not longer we had the first citizen death which was that of one of the Nurses that attended to Late Patrick Sawyer, the initial dead. Now, according to the Minister for Heath in his latest press statement, we already have 10 suspected cases of infected persons and no fewer than 100 Nigerians who have directly or indirectly associated with Sawyer during his short-lived visit to Nigeria are on the watch list of his Ministry. These ones are carefully monitored fearing the probability of them not to have contracted the disease.

Without much ado, Ebola is no longer a joke and the fact is that this disease is not something that should be handled with carefree attitude or negligence both by our leaders or we citizens ourselves. Fortunately unfortunately, Ebola is not the disease of the Poor so to say. Any infected rich that is not lucky enough may not last longer than 21 days the most before kicking the bucket. Kudos to some State Governments and even the Federal Government who have reasonably shown concern not only by words but by putting necessary infrastructures in place to avoid the further spread of Ebola.

I neither live in Lagos nor see myself visiting Lagos anytime soon but I am a card carrying and authentic student of the Nigeria’s best tertiary institution, Obafemi Awolowo University where fruit Bats live with us and interact with us in various ways. This ranging from dropping their faeces on passers-by to making melodious sounds that can cool the brain in any hot afternoon. I am not trying to create any tension here but the earlier we understand and accept facts about our zone, the better for us. The peculiarity of our University campus is something that tells the deaf and obvious to the blind that we are not fully fortified against this so much publicized disease.

In response to the above reality, the university management commendably sometimes last week released a statement on the Ebola virus. {OAU authorities Issues Red Alert on Ebola Virus.}

We really appreciate the school authority for its prompt and needed response but the question is this, beyond ordinary statement, are there precautionary measures already put in place to check and arrest this issue peradventure we have any reported cases? I am happy that the University may be re-opened in less than three weeks from now but the fear of Ebola is something that continues to rigmarole in my mind and bang my brain hard.

I am not a medical student but I can read, hear and see what the Lagos State Government is doing in terms of effective measures been put in place to prevent and contain the Ebola outbreak. Even though I doubt if the number of the entire fruit bats in Lagos surpass what we have on our campus. Isolation centres are been built, Emergency lines are given to the public, aggressive media sensitization on how to prevent any eventuality, all these among many others. Is this the same in our own case? Lagos is a State Government but OAU is a school. Yes, we understand that but let us not forget there are little things the increased school fees of the students can do to save the precious lives of the university community occupants from this disease. Recently, the President declared a National State of Emergency and doled out a whooping sum of N1.9bn to fight the spread of Ebola, OAU is definitely a susceptible zone and I believe our management should try and present their case before the Federal Government so as to be financed in the war against Ebola on OAU campus.

I will not like to dwell much on this Call To Action for now because I believe we have learned and right thinking minds in our University government but if at the end of it all, we still suffer from what we know, understand and could prevent, then the outside world will laugh at us and deservedly call us the Educated Illiterates!
